In my own first article I wrote how there is never been a better time for you to buy a hi-def H-d television, and Id just pre-ordered the Samsung HLS-5087W 50 inch back projection DLP unit. The Samsung was provided last Thursday and heres a summary of my initial response. First let me give some back ground on preparing for the new H-d tv. Im a satellite television subscriber and needed to enhance my DirecTV equipment to become HD-compatible. So I signed to http://www.directv.com and bought the HD update package last month. For 200 DirecTV arrived on the scene and replaced my old satellite dish with a new 5-LNB square H-d dish. The HD deal included the rental of DirecTVs new H20 HD radio, and also included adding a new UHF antenna on my roof to receive other-the-air OTA HD local broadcasts. The dish and receiver were required for HD party since DirecTV is shifting local HD broadcasts within the new MPEG-4 pressure structure rather than the older MPEG-2 standard. Since HD material requires a lot more bandwidth than standard definition video, cable and satellite providers will be moving to the new MPEG-4 standard over time and DirecTV is leading the method for now. I was now all set to receive HD programming when Samsung HLS-5087W arrived with one exception - the digital video/audio signal to be output by an HDMI cable from the H20 to the Samsung. Im a big believer in investing in top quality cables for analog connections between audio/video components. But HDMI is a digital interface that sends a stream of 0s and 1s. Therefore often it works or it doesnt. I consequently bought a 20 HDMI cable on the net rather than committing 90 or more to get a Monster cable that I thought would provide a similar audio and video quality. One neat thing about HDMI is that it bears both video and audio signals in uncompressed, digital form to help you easily reduce the wire clutter behind your house theater system. Now every thing was ready - I just needed the new Samsung to be sent. I bought the television from Crutchfield, which has a great reputation for customer care, is a certified Samsung on line store, and offered the television without any tax or shipping charges. It was hard to believe that I could improve upon the grade of the Samsungs picture out-of the field, but fine-tuning the picture options triggered a more film-like appearance of films from both my DVD player and H20 device. I am excited to seeing the year initial of HBOs Entourage series in full HD glory today. It is also going to be difficult holding off purchasing a HD DVD supply with HD-DVD and Blu-ray players and titles now beginning to look. But I will speak about that in my next article..
